CADRS adds CAM: milling, simulating and posting G-code

This is the English reading version of the Dutch news item CADRS voegt CAM toe: frezen, simuleren en G-code posten.

CADRS, the open-source parametric CAD programme, has added CAM. In today’s release it is there as an early preview: you create a job, pick a machine and a setup, and let the programme mill or cut. Until now programmes like this stopped at the model, and the milling work went to a separate CAM package.

CAM studio in CADRS: the job list with a 3-axis mill and a 2D profile on the left, the simulated part in the middle
A simple profile milled and simulated in CADRS.

What is in it according to the maker: jobs, machines and setups; milling with boring, a 2D profile with tabs, adaptive clearing and parallel finishing; plasma cutting with kerf compensation; the toolpath is replayed on screen, the remaining stock is calculated, and the G-code goes out for Fanuc and LinuxCNC QtPlasmaC. One thing he says himself: it is still in progress.

My verdict: it is fairly limited in what it can do, but the basis is there. I managed to make a simple CAM programme and simulate it.

What CADRS did earlier is in CADRS considers another kernel, and CADRS itself is at rvdende.github.io/cadrs. What is in this release is in the release notes. Keep an eye on this site for updates and tests, I will keep following CADRS and publish my findings here.
