_This is the English reading version of the Dutch news item [Mitcad leest Fusion- en FreeCAD-bestanden met hun tijdlijn](https://opensourcecad.nl/vibecoded-apps/mitcad-leest-fusion-en-freecad-bestanden-met-hun-tijdlijn/)._

Mitcad is a new open-source CAD program for Windows, Linux and macOS, under the
MIT licence. It looks a lot like FreeCAD: the same kernel (OCCT), the same interface
building blocks (Qt), and a parametric timeline with sketches, features and parameters
here too.

It sets itself apart by reading files. They say that FreeCAD (.FCStd), Fusion (.
f3d and .f3z), Inventor (.ipt) and SolidCraft designs come in with their feature
timeline, sketches and parameters, so you can open an existing design and carry
on editing it. The ordinary exchange formats are there as well: STEP, IGES, BRep,
STL, OBJ, DXF and 3MF, alongside IFC and Revit.

I have not been able to test that myself yet, so I cannot say whether it works in
practice. If it holds up, it is exactly what CAD users have been running into for
years: your work is locked inside the program you made it in.

**My verdict:** it is too early for that. I am following it. It is open source under
the MIT licence, you install it yourself and you need no account, but try it yourself
first before you put anything important in it: the repository has only existed since
the beginning of October.

Mitcad is on [GitHub](https://github.com/mitcad/Mitcad), the site is [mitcad.org](https://mitcad.org/).
